In honor of my good friend who just moved to Edinburgh to marry a great Scot, I present to you a playlist filled with other great Scots! I will keep updating and would love for other users to send me cool Scottish tunes to add to the list. Thanks fellow Playlisters!
In honor of today’s independence vote, here is my playlist filled with Scottish artists that I released in December of 2013. Whether they vote to stay or vote to go, Scots are awesome in my book.
Getting my final eBay / other clothing purchases in. It’s the year of saving dangerously!
9-17-14 to 9-17-15
Wishing ashkenazkitten the best of luck in her quest to be shopping free for one year!!! It is tough but so rewarding!! I’ll be cheering you on, girl!! :-)
Day one of being able to shop, and lord knows I went straight to Target after work hahahaha! As promised, my first purchase was some new chonies! I have an underwear drawer stuffed to the gills with pairs that don’t fit, give wedgies, have seen better days, etc. I seriously can’t wait to toss some of my crappiest pairs. It was high time for some freshies.
Given my tight $50.00 budget for this half month, I opted for affordable Fruit of the Loom multi-packs. One pack was 5 for $9.99 and the other was 6 for $8.59. I used a $5.00 gift card that I earned from tampon purchases last month so all in all I still have $36.42 left in this month’s clothing budget. I think I may hold on to that balance and use it next month to buy a new pair of Clarks brown boots…
Just so you know, I spent almost half an hour deciding which undies to buy! I felt ridiculous standing in front of the Hanes and Fruit of the Looms for so long, but I wanted to get the most bang for my buck! I am pretty sure the rest of my shopping decisions this year are going to be just as stressful.
Side note, of course I had to check out what was left of the Altuzarra for Target collab and there is a LOT still in stock. It is not selling well in North Haven! The one dress I was seriously considering spending my $50 budget on was available but the sleeves looked too small, a common problem with Target collab shirts/blouses/dresses in the larger sizes. Honestly designers, ladies that are size 16 most likely don’t have skinny arms. I have a Jason Wu for Target blouse with the tags still on it because of tight sleeves. Of course, like a lot of women I hold on to it with hopes that it will fit when I theoretically lose weight…It’s been a couple years now hahaha!
Year one’s plan went pretty swimmingly! For someone who typically gives up on new projects relatively quickly and regularly (guitar, jewelry making, learning Spanish, learning Catalan, etc.) I surprisingly stuck it out like a champ. Everyone keeps asking me what is next now that my year is through. “Are you going to go crazy shopping again?” No, my friends. Now it’s time to really challenge myself.
Per some great article recommendations from my awesome friend Lauren, I learned about proper budgeting. According to Who What Wear via Pete the Planner, 5% of your take home pay can be allocated to your clothing budget. I won’t tell what I earn, but I am going set myself a $100 per month clothing budget, which is less than 5% of my take home.
As for beauty products, I am going to only replace items once I have completely run out of them. Those 5 bottles of facial cleansers will eventually all get used, dangit!! Of course, drug store products purchased with coupons/on sale will be preferential. No crazy Sephora spending sprees in the near future for this kid.
So I am setting up a spreadsheet for myself. Every purchase I make in a month will be debited from my $100 budget. If any funds are leftover at the end of the month, they get added to a slush fund for making big ticket purchases (coats, boots, fancy bags etc.). If I go over my budget during the month (and over the slush fund balance) the amount of overage will get deducted from the next month with an extra $25 penalty. Going over will cost me. Since we are halfway through the month, September’s budget is just $50.
Finally, for every piece of new clothing that enters my closet, one piece of old clothing will be tossed or donated.
Going cold turkey was relatively simple. Actually being able to shop, but keeping to a strict budget may prove more difficult. Once an addict, always an addict. When alcoholics or drug addicts go into treatment, one more drink or hit can send them spiraling back into a bad place. I am a bit worried that having a taste of getting new and fabulous things will bring me right back into my old ways.
Keeping up with this blog will, hopefully, keep me honest and keep me on track. I won’t post daily outfit pictures like last year, but I will post a couple outfits a week, some styling and makeup tips, fun links and more playlists and music recommendations. And some time in the near future I will be making the move from Tumblr to my own self-run website. I hope you join me for year two!
Day 365 Outfit: I made it!!! My last day of being shopping free!!! To help mark the occasion in high style, my oldest friend (not in age, in friend years) Marybeth Orlowski (aka MB) came to New Haven to take some profesh looking shots of me at East Rock Park in New Haven. Isn’t she crazy talented?! Go pro, girl! We had such a perfect afternoon laughing and reminiscing.
Speaking of reminiscing, here are some things that I learned this year:
Thank you all for putting up with my daily outfits (the good, the bad and the meh) and for following along as I worked on bettering myself. I will be a shopping addict forever – my addiction is no different than others. However this year I took great strides in getting it under control. I’ll reveal my plan a bit later tonight that outlines how I will keep this positive progress going as I slowly reintroduce shopping back into my life. Year two starts tomorrow!
Dress & Pearls – LOFT, Leggings – Target, Shoes – Keds, Top – Old Navy, Bracelet & Ring – Lia Sophia, Sunnies – Opening Ceremony, Bag & Scarf – 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target - This whole idea started after my 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target binge, including this Boom scarf, which still had the tags on it before I used it today. In with a Boom and out with a Boom!
Day 364 Outfit: Guys, tomorrow is the last day!! WHAT?!!! This year has flown by!! Tomorrow I will have some special photos and an outline of my new plan for next year and onward. Until then - here is my last lazy Sunday edition of my year off from shopping:-)
Top - Mossimo for Taget, Leggins/skirt combo - QVC purchase from my mom, Shoes - Converse
Day 363 Outfit: ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT!!!! I had a fabulous evening hanging out with my girls! I held a Redbook L’oreal Happy Hour House Party wherein we had some yummy mimosas & snacks and tried the new L’oreal Miracle Blur Instant Eye Smoother. Everyone was excited to check out their goody bags which included some full sized L’oreal products and samples, as well as free subscriptions to my favorite magazine, Redbook! The party pack came with the September issue so all the girls got to check out the Real Women Style Awards spread, which was great, since all of them were dedicated voters;-)
Some of the ladies had to leave early so the few that stayed behind had a ball doing makeovers to mimic looks from the Kevyn Aucoin books. Shannon tackled Liz Taylor, Sarah rocked Marilyn Monroe and I went with Barbra Streisand. We had so much fun playing with makeup:-) We even took shots mimicing the poses from the book which came out great! I cannot wait until the next ladies night!!
Dress - Jason Wu for Target, Top - 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target, Leggings - American Apparel, Shoes - Keds
Fashionista Conference 2014, a playlist by thomyorkesbadeye on Spotify
A few months back I was honored to be asked to make a playlist for the 2014 Fashionista Conference. They asked for a Girls Just Want to Have Fun vibe so I came up with this almost 8 hour long playlist chock full of amazing female performers. The ladies at Fashionista are amazing - if you don’t already follow the site I seriously recommend adding it to your favorite RSS/blog reader.
This is the playlist I will be rocking today at my Redbook L’Oreal Houseparty. It is upbeat, fun and full of girl power - a perfect backdrop to any ladies night. Enjoy!!!
Day 362 Outfit: ONLY 4 DAYS LEFT!!! And it’s FRIDAY!!! And my back feels better!!! Things are looking up;-) The lighting was just right - Hubby did a great job on these shots today. I must say he has improved dramatically as a photographer this year. I could not have done this without him:-)
Dress- Stylemint, Leggings - Juicy Couture, Shoes - Payless, Watch - Swatch, Bag - Stone Mountain, Necklace - Kendra Scott, Cari - Gap, Sunnies - Westward Leaning
CLOSET COUNTDOWN #1: Tank tops. Seen visibly in pictures 107 times but layered underneath outfits practically daily.
Because I own so many tank tops (95% of which are Old Navy Perfect tanks) I did not bother to count them separately. I just lumped them into one category and then marveled at just how often I wear them when doing my clothing count. I don’t know why I was so surprised to see such a high number, but I was. I never wore tank tops as a kid - I still have a thing about showing my bare arms in public. However once I started wearing tanks as a layering piece to add pops of color here and there, I was hooked.
I honestly don’t know how many tanks I own, but it is quite ridiculous. I took some shots of my collection, which you can see above, however those are only the ones that were clean. I had a ton more waiting to be washed. I have all sorts of solid colors with the occasional striped design. Some of them are so old you would not even recognize the Old Navy logos on the inside. I only throw them away when the hem starts to unravel, which does not happen very often! I think I only tossed 2 this year. They are shockingly sturdy for such a “cheap” item.
I love them because they are: 1. affordable (on sale you can grab these suckers for $3 a pop), 2. colorful (every year they release new shades - I have a great blue collection - from powder to teal to navy), and 3. layerable (I know it is not a real word but dangit it should be). That last bit is the most important. Have a button down that pulls in the boob area (a common problem for me)? Wear a tank underneath and only button the top half way - you get a pop of color and a (now) wearable top. Have a tshirt that clings and shows your rolls? Put a tank underneath and it helps to smooth out and cover those rolls. Want to try the crop top trend but don’t want to bare your belly? Wear a fitted tank underneath - you get the silhouette without the skin! See what I mean?!
Another plus - they roll up nice and small so they are great for travelling. I always pack at least 10 tanks when I go to Europe, whatever the season may be.
If you want to start your own tank top collection, I recommend starting with the Old Navy perfect tank - it is ribbed and long so you can really show off the colors when you layer.
Well there you have it, my closet countdown is complete. I hope you enjoyed it:-) Maybe I will make it an annual list!
